How to afford your education

If your educational and career goal is to attend beauty school, finding resource to pay for tuition without government financial aid may require a little more creative thinking and may seem unconventional. However, at Hair Society Institute of Cosmetology, we believe in creative and unconventional. To assist you with your planning, here are 4 ways to help you make your education affordable and possibly earn your diploma debt free!

WIOA -Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act

FREE TUITION TO THOSE WHO QUALIFY!

WIOA helps fund eligible individuals’ education in Cosmetology. Often WIOA will cover the whole tuition cost for those students who qualify.

Interested North Dakota and Montana individuals need to make an appointment at their nearest North Dakota Job Service Center and to speak to a WIOA case manager. This option is not currently available for Nail Technology.

Scholarships

Start now and research all opportunities for scholarships! Scholarships are typically based on merit and do not need to be repaid. Apply for as many scholarships that you qualify for and signup for updates. You should never pay to apply for a scholarship, avoid any websites that require application or processing fees.

The North Dakota Community Foundation offers a numerous scholarships to North Dakota graduates. Applications are generally submitted and reviewed from January 1 st to April 1st each year, though some scholarships do have different application periods. For more information, please visit:

Company & Branded Scholarships

​Sport Clips awards several scholarships worth $1000 to students from AACS member schools. This is limited to one recipient from each school, chosen through a selection committee comprising of Sport Clip Area Developers, SCI Support, and team leaders. The deadline for applications is January 31st of each year. Applications can be submitted online.

OPI Scholarships

This cosmetics brand provides grants of $500 each to 24 students. Eligibility is based on an essay submission. The essay can be submitted in written or video form. The program is open to incoming freshmen and cosmetology students with good standing. For more information visit:

Grants are financial aid based on need, that doesn’t have to be paid back. Search for grants:

Payment Plan

​

Students who are unable to make full payment of the tuition may make payment arrangements with the School. We recommend that students have the payment plan approved at least 30 days prior to the start of classes. Hair Society Institute offers such a payment plan through TFC Tuition Financing.

 

With TFC students would be able to set up a two-tier payment plan to finance their education. The first tier is a 0% interest baring monthly payment for up to 6 months before the start of class. The second tier is a 3-4% interest baring monthly payment for the months the student is in class. Please contact the Admissions Department for more information.

Industry associations within the beauty industry provide scholarship opportunities to cosmetology students struggling to meet their tuition costs. OPI “A GREAT OPERA-TUNITY” STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship offers $3,000 to newly accepted or currently enrolled POC students in a nail technology program that leads to licensure in the U.S. or Canada. To qualify, applicants must identify as a person of color. This scholarship is awarded through the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation. For more information visit:

American Health and Beauty Aids Institute Scholarship

A Chicago-based foundation, AHBAI issues scholarships under the Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation. Over the years, the institute has provided more than $670,000 in grants to African American cosmeticians.
